Hydration during exercise- top 3 FAQs
It’s that time of year! We’re putting our road bikes onto our trainers and playing tennis indoors and thinking ahead to ski season! Why not take a minute to take a look at how you are fuelling your body at the same time.  Are you getting the right foods, the right fluids and the right amounts?
The dietitians at atp nutrition thought we’d help you out with some of our most frequently asked questions. From our most elite athletes to our first time 5km runners; we hear the same three questions about hydration!

How much water should I be drinking?
The amount of water you will need will depend on a number of factors such as your size, the type and duration of your exercise and the temperature. As a general rule, drink 10ml of water for every kg of your body weight for every hour you are exercising. (80kg=800ml/hour)

How can I know if I’m drinking enough?
Check the color of your urine- it’s an age old trick that really does the trick! It should be pale yellow if you are well hydrated.

What about caffeine?
Caffeine has long been considered to be a dehydrator. However, the bulk of the evidence fails to prove this theory. Bottom line, moderate caffeine intake is unlikely to negatively affect your hydration status, or an athletic performance.
So, what is moderate caffeine intake for one day?
1. 3 cups of regular coffee (these are 8oz cups – a Second Cup medium is 16oz)
2. 4 red bulls
3. 4 double espressos
4. 3 cups of caffeinated tea with a strong brew

Read Kate Comeau's latest article on Chickadvisor.com where she explains why the numbers on the scale and your BMI aren't necssarily your ticket health.

Below are the tables that go along with her article:

Find your BMI in the table below.

Your BMI Score
What it means
18.5 to 24.9
You have a healthy weight and have a lower chance of developing health problems.
Under 18.5
You may be more likely to develop certain health problems such as:
·         Undernutrition
·         Osteoporosis
·         Infertility
·         Compromises immunity
25.0 to 29.9
You may be more likely to develop certain weight-related health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Over 30.0
30.0 - 34.9 = high
35.0 - 39.9 = very high
Over 40.0 = extremely high
You are at high risk to develop health problems related to weight such as:
·         Heart disease
·         High blood pressure
·         Type 2 diabetes
·         Certain cancers
·         Elevated blood lipids
·         Obstructive sleep apnea
·         Gallbladder disease.
To find BMI divide your weight (in kg) by your height (in metres) squared.
ex: A woman who is 70kg (154lb) who is 1.7m (170 cm) tall has a BMI of 24.à70/(1.7)2 =24

What a beautiful day for a marathon! We had so much fun at our booth at the marathon expo speaking with runners and cyclists. Pearle and Kate also gave two energizing presentations entitled “10 things every runner should know!”.  We were at the finish line to cheer on the runners including our clients, the four runners from La Presse Courir pour la forme and of course Pearle Nerenberg and Stephanie Jamain, dietitians here at atp nutrition!
